Friday Lunch

Friday Lunch

This friday, our new venture was the food place "Shriyaz", near Big Bazaar, Patia,Bhubaneswar.
The restaurant is newly opened and has not yet started to publicize itself much.

We, however, were at the place in search of some good food place for lunch, and happened to see this food place. The restaurant is in the second floor of the buiding, to the left of Big Bazaar, Patia.

Interiors:-
The place looked a little congested with all 4 seat arrangements. The hall was narrow and looked a bit shabilly planned. The wall on the right had tiles with the US flag printed on each tile. (The place served All Indian cuisines and Chinese cuisines, but has US flag on the walls of the restaurant... Themeless and Meaningless!!)

The left side had the billing counter, the kitchen and the washroom to a corner and a speaker placed in the other corner. Again this looked very unplanned and did not give a very good impression.
On the left half, I also found an area of the wall reserved for doodles on a green board. That was the only innovative thing that caught my attention.

Overall rating- 2.5/5 for the interior.

Food :_
We started with cold drinks. They keep Thumbs up, Sprite and Coke, which is not much in the list. So we ordered 1 Thumbs up. This was served in a standard size glass with a straw, without much of a fancy.
So 0 marks for presentation

Appetizers:-
Next, we ordered the the starters- Drums of heaven and Golden Fried Prawns.
On asking the waiter about the difference between the drums of heaven and chicken lollipop, he said that we would get medium chicken pieces cooked with sauce and other ingredients for chicken lollipop and the deep fried chicken served with separate dip for chicken drums of heaven. So we ordered The chicken Drums of Heaven and this was what we got to our dismay.
Drums of heaven
The chicken was soaked in a mixture of maida and cornflour with the flavors of pepper and garlic in it and deep fried. It was soft and juicy and very well fried but did not amaze my taste buds any further. The dip it had, looked yellow and had a gel like texture. It was a fusion of chilly sauce, vinegar, garlic and ginger, all of the flavors very prominent and recognizable in the dip.
They serve 6 medium size chicken pieces for Drums of Heaven and Chicken Lollipop.

Coming to the Golden Fried Prawns, these were the general cornflour soaked deep fried prawns without any extraordinary or genuine taste. The dish could have been far better than what they served if they had some more flavors along with the plane cornflour fried prawns. These were also served in a 6-piece batch with a serving of extra chilly garlic sauce, this time the sauce being redder, thicker and much better than the previous serving of the dip served with the Drums of Heaven. This sauce tasted similar to the gravy given with Momos.

Overall rating- 2.5/5(not satisfied)

Main Coarse:-
For main coarse we ordered
Chicken Punjabi

Plain naan and fried rice

Chicken kadhai
  1. plain naan
  2. Chicken Punjabi
  3. Chicken kadhai
  4. mixed Fried Rice.
Naan:The naan was the standard naan, without any extra toppings or ingredients. The naan tasted close to a maida chapati but was soft and moist. Wouldn't call it delicious but can rate it better than the rest of the dishes. The naan was fluffy, soft, moist and had a mild sweetness to it.

Chicken Punjabi: The dish was extremely spicy and was overloaded with all the condiments and Indian spices possible , in the cook book. This was a total disappointment and it literally got the shit out of me , in finishing the one spoon of curry I took to accompany my naan. I can better describe this as a bowl of soft and juicy, well marinated Chicken with lots of chillies and a rich and heavy gravy.  The chicken pieces were boneless and you would get 4 pieces in 1 plate of Chicken Punjabi. Spice lovers will definitely love this dish to the core.

Chicken Kadhai: This was a mildly spicy dish with standard spice and a thick gravy. The chicken had a mild sweetness to it and had the flavors of Garlic and butter prominent in it. Like the Chicken Punjabi, these chicken pieces were also well marinated and were soft and juicy from within with the flavors well seeped in. The other flavors weren't very prominent though, yet one can tell that the chicken was cooked on a slow flame and was well cooked for a good 20 to 30 minutes.

Fried Rice: This was the usual fried rice made from the long Basmati rice. The rice was slightly under cooked and also had a sprinkle of spice to it. It had vegies such as finely chopped carrots, finely chopped beans, peas, raisins and few pieces of scrambled eggs and bits of fried chicken in it. Having ordered mixed fried rice, I expected few pieces of prawns as well, as served in most of the other food places, but it was a disappointment here as well. "No Prawns!, less chicken! less eggs! and lots of semi cooked veggies and under cooked rice served in a bowl"

Garnishing
I would rate a 0 on the presentation since there was no presentation nor the slightest bit of garnishing on any of the dishes or drinks.

Price
The dishes ranged from a price of 75 to 300.
All the dishes we ordered were in the range of 120 to 150.
Total Billing amount for us = 810 (for 3 people) which fairly reasonable. The restaurant also doesn't charge any service fees nor does it provide any corporate or other discounts for the time being.

The place is good for people looking for a food place with an average budget of 700 to 100 for a group of 2 to 4 people.

Overall rating- 3/5

Pegasus Restro and Bar, Bhubaneswar

Pegasus Restro and Bar, Bhubaneswar:-

This Sunday, i.e 1-1-2017, we decided to celebrate our new year in Pegasus. We reached the place at around 1:30 after our movie at Shaheed Nagar.
The restro was suggested by a friend, so giving it a try was a must.

Interiors:-

The restro has two functional floors and the third floor has some interior designing going on, so it isn't functional yet.
The ground floor is the Bar and lounge. The place has LEDs setup for display, an amazing base sound system and music on the floor playing to your choice. I'm not much of a alcohol person, so cannot comment on the collection, choice or quality of service and alcohol offered on the ground floor.
The first floor is the Restaurant. This is suggested for the couples and families as this is a bit better ventilated, spacious and has a typically formal dining arrangement. This floor also has a good music system and an LED display, playing songs or other channels as per the viewer's choice.
The lighting in the place was a bit dark though. But there are small leds on the roof, which are enabled if requested by the guests.
The doors have a frosted finish with the sketch of a Pegasus glossed on it. A very innovative idea and one of the striking features about the designing.

Appetizers:-
We were first served with some corn chips and water as a complimentary dish for our first visit. We then ordered two starters
  1. Bali Prawn
  2. Fish Fingers
Bali Prawn:-
This dish was the best pick for the day's menu and one of their specialties as well. The prawns were pinned with toothpicks and fried well. The dish was served crispy and sizzling with a bowl of mayo. The fish was not messed up with too many spices or flavors. A simple fried fish with salt and pepper on it. You get 8 pieces of prawns per plate and you can ask for an extra serving of mayo just as my friend did. The mayo dip tasted the usual, creamy mayo. I wish these were some chopped garlic and mint leaves added to it to enhance the flavor as the flavor wasn't very prominent. But maybe that's what enhanced the prawns more...
The dish is good enough to make you want another plate.
A must try!!

Fish Fingers:-
This dish was again an excellent appetizer and is sure to fascinate your taste buds. Soft and light, and served with a creamy dip . Slightly spicy and tastes best when eaten with the dip and some tomato and chilly ketchup along with it. The dish can be rated a 4/5 for its simple yet delicate taste.

Main Coarse

Mixed Veg Fried Rice: The fried rice had the usual taste. The rice was partially boiled and partially fried. It had veggies like carrot, peas, finely chopped onion and shredded beans. The carrots were chopped to cubes and gave a good crunch to the dish. The rice was a simple yet fresh dish as I could feel the moisture in the dish as I ate it.

Hyderabadi Kadhai Mushroom: This dish was a bit on the richer and heavier side. The curry was creamy and had a good texture in the gravy. It was spicy and gave a tinge of the Royal Hyderabadi Nawab feeling in its taste. The mushrooms used were the regular Button mushrooms cut into halves. Each mushroom was sliced into 2, and was fresh and juicy. The gravy was well absorbed into the mushroom and the dish clearly reflected that the mushrooms were well marinated before they were put on fire. The gravy had the richness of roasted cashew paste along with the aroma of the nawabi spices such as elaichi and cloves. The dish was served with the fried rice and a garnish of coriander and flower cut tomatoes.

The overall experience was good. For a new restro, the price seems to be a bit on the higher end, but the food says it all.

Quaker Masala Oats-chaat style

Quaker Masala Oats-chaat style :-

This Saturday I tried the Quaker Masala Oats-chaat style for my breakfast. The oats come in a pouch of net quantity 40g in a mint green colored packaging.

  8. Fennel powder
  9. Ginger powder
  10. Mango(amchur)powder

Garnishing Tips :-
The dish can be served with coriander and mint leaves, pomegranate, chilled yogurt(sweet or salty), mint chutney and some crushed bhujia and onions.

Preperation time- 3 to 3.50 mins

Review:-
The prominent flavors include those of mango powder, ginger powder, tamarind and coriander powder. The dish has a sweet, spicy and tangy taste and would definitely be a dish of attraction for chaat lovers. There are a variety of vegetables, such as small cubes of carrots, sweet corn, coriander and peas making it tasty as well as nutritious. In addition you can also add boiled chikpeas(chana dal), spouts or peanuts to make it more chaat-like and healthy.

The dish is suitable for breakfast, brunch and super. A good source of nourishment and taste for health conscious people.

The oats has a refreshing, colorful and innovative combination of ingredients and taste , although it does not reflect the taste of a typical street-style chaat but is definitely a good attempt by Quaker to take us a step forward in combining health with taste.

The Salt

Saturday Outing

We left home at 12:30 on Saturday and had plans of watching a recent movie in the "Forum mall" at Kormangala,Bangalore. But by the time we reached the venue we were hungry, tired and dehydrated due to all the dust, pollution and traffic. As we entered the mall, we found a restaurant called "SALT". The name was attractive and so was the idea. The restaurant was divided into two sections, italian and Indian. We decided to go for the Indian side of it. As we entered the place, the lady at the reception showed us the way to our table. We sat on the table close to the bar, the table being second from the entrance.

The restaurant has a small bar close to the entrance which serves soft drinks, lemonades, juices as well as hard drinks. As we took our places, the waiter gave us the menu. We were given the usual as well as the special menu cards.  As we went through the menu, I decided to focus only on the starters and appetizers.

SHORBA
We started with the Indian Soup which is better known as Shorba.  This soup had a creamy consistency(not thick as there was no cornflour added to it to increase its consistency)  with a mild hint of pepper. The soup also had crisp golden fried onions and a pinch of saffron for flavor. Not very rich, mildly spicy with small chunks of boiled shredded chicken added as a base to the Indian gravy soup.
Rating: 3.5/5

The Fryums
The soup was followed by the Indian rice pappad or Fryums. These were colored Pappads, deep fried and sprinkled with salt and served with mint chutney. These yummy fried pappads are made from powdered rice and have a salty and spicy taste to them. These are served as a complimentary starter.
Rating:3/5

Crispy Veggies
Unlike most other restaurants that serve deep fried vegetables like cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and mushroom named crispy veggies, this food place serves finely chopped vegetables like cabbage, carrots and beans shallow fried and sprinkled with masala toppings and cheese , wrapped with a thin and crispy coat. These thin crispies have the perfect crunch and taste needed for your taste buds to want more.
Rating:4/5

Kebab Chicken Wrap
The wrap was tightly rolled with a filling of chicken chunks, cabbage and capsicum. The filling did not taste much like kebab but had the flavors prominent in smoky butter chicken curry mixed with cream and sauce. The chicken pieces were cut in cubes and were mouth filling. The dish was served with a bucket of french fries and some sprouts, beetroot, tomato and lettuce mixed salad with a squeeze of lemon in it.
Rating:3/5

Fried Squids:-
The Squids were also brought in a wired container that looked similar to a mini bucket made from copper and bronze. The fried fingers had a crispy yet chewy texture. Not very impressive with the taste. They tasted similar to any regular fish that is slightly more chewy yet juicy and appetizing. The recipe could be a bit more innovative but the chef does not seem to have made much of a fusion with the dish keeping it light and simple. This dish was also served with the same sprouts salad, sliced lemon and mint chutney to go with it.
Rating:2.6/5

Fresh Lime Soda(salty) :-
Our lunch ended with a glass of fresh lime soda, garnished with a slice of lemon and mint leaves. The drink had the strong flavor of lemon fused with soda. The drink was very strong with the taste and I wish it could be a bit milder with the tangyness of lemon with some more salt added to it.

I would love to get your comments on the dishes apart from the ones mentioned in the post.

My Tea Dips-1

 MY TEA DIPS

The best time to have a cup of tea...... Well!!!! There's no best time to have it. Have it when you wake up, early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when you are fed up of your work and literally drowsing off or sitting before your desktop, staring at the codes and graphs in office with drooping eyes or carrying a load full of tension and stress due to your daily dose of unexpected happenings.... You will always find a cup of tea waiting next to you for you to take a sip of that hot steaming beverage and fall in love with it all over again.

DIP 1: GREEN TEA
I've noticed that my love for tea is growing with my age and I've started to enjoy it at the most unexpected places and unlikely times. My recent attractions have developed for "green tea" . According to many people green teas are not very good at their tastes nor do they give a satisfactory feeling of having tea as they are generally served without sugar which is not very appealing to the senses of tea-lovers. Frankly, even I didn't get a very good impression of these teas until I started taking green tea regularly with the correct brewing and correct choice and quantity of tea leaves.

Green tea is an un-oxidized tea that is named – obviously for its green colored leaves and green tinged color when brewed. As I went a bit into the history of green tea I found that these tea leaves probably first originated in the southwest area of China more than 3,000 years ago, and was initially used by people just for chewing and eating, Over time, the use of leaves and buds from the tea tree gradually expanded as people began to use it in cooking and adding to boiling water to flavor the water they drank.

I was not a very keen green tea follower but when I started hearing reviews from people about its benefits and effects, i thought of giving it a try. I started with the "Organic India Tulsi Green Tea".

When I tried it for the first time, it was something similar to colored water with the aroma of Tulsi in it. Gradually I learnt the technique of brewing the tea properly and I was pretty impressed with the results.
If using a tea bag,

  1. Boil a cup of water or just microwave heat it for about 2-3 mins.
  2.  Add the green tea bag to the cup of boiling water.
  3. Allow it to steep in the hot water for 3-5 mins
  4. Before removing the tea bag, dip it 2 to 3 times and remove it from the cup
  5. Add a few drops of lemon (a pinch of pepper if needed for a spicy tinge) and half a tea spoon of artificial sweetener or sugar as per your requirements.

It is suggested that you have it without sugar for better benefits. Adding a crushed ginger to the green mixture also acts wonders if you are suffering from cold or throat dryness or fever.

    If using tea leaves,
    1. Boil a cup of water in a saucepan or any boiling vessel.
    2.  Add one teaspoon of Organic India Tulsi Green Tea to the vessel of boiling water(the optimal temperature is 80 degree Celsius. At a higher temperature, the tea gets bitter).
    3. Allow it to boil for 3-5 mins.
    4. Add a few drops of lemon (a pinch of pepper if needed for a spicy tinge) and half a tea spoon of artificial sweetener or sugar as per your requirements.
    5. Serve it hot.

On trying the above method with the  "Organic India Tulsi Green Tea", I got the flavors of tulsi, lemon and a tinge of spiciness along with the tangy taste of lemon and ginger blended well with the color from the green leafy dry tea powder or mixture.

The "Organic India Green Tea" also comes in other delighful flavors such as

Some other brands of green tea available in India are :-

                        • 24 Mantra Organic Green Tea
                        • Basilur
                        • Typhoo
                        • Golden Tips
                        • Twinings
                        • Happy Valley
                        • Lipton
                        • Tetley
                        • LaPlant

Now coming to the Benefits of green tea:-

                      • Green tea is naturally rich in antioxidant which boost immune system.
                      • Green tea helps in reducing stress and shedding extra kilos
                      • Green Tea is said to be the healthiest drink present today.
                      • It’s green tea, which wraps up all our health worries and throws them out of our mind and body.
                      • Green Tea is like an elixir. It not only helps in weight loss, but also acts as a medicine to fight against cancer, depression and blood pressure.
                      • Compounds in Green Tea Can Improve Brain Function. The key active ingredient is caffeine, which is a known stimulant. It doesn’t contain as much as coffee, but enough to produce a response without causing the “jittery” effects associated with too much caffeine.
                      • Green tea can kill bacteria which improves dental health and lowers your risk of infection.
                      • Green tea also reduces risk of Type II Diabetes .

                      • Apart from these major benefits, green tea also has various other benefits such as improves your skin quality and stimulates hair growth.
Although this tea has a wide range of health and skin benefits, there are certain things that should be kept in mind before or while using it.
Drinking too much green tea, which is more than five cups a day, is not recommended. If had in excess, it can create various health issues. It contains caffeine, which can induce headaches, sleeplessness, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, and heartburn. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid green tea due to its caffeine content. Green tea may aggravate certain conditions, including anxiety, osteoporosis, liver damage, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Green tea also lowers blood sugar, which is why diabetics ingesting it should carefully monitor their blood glucose.
When it comes to green tea, the options are endless. So pick one, or even try them all, to find your perfect match.

                        THE LUNCH ADDA

                         THE LUNCH ADDA

This was about 1:10 in the afternoon when my team from office decided to go for lunch and one of them suggested the Adda Restaurant in Patia, close to KIIT campus. So the 6 of us reached the Adda food place and to our surprise this new place was a partial rooftop and partial interior restaurant.
The restaurant is on the 4th floor. As we entered the place, I felt a sweet aroma which was a lot similar to that of the scent of a berry burnt mildly, and as I looked through the hall, we found 3 people sitting around a multi stemmed instrument. This was a hookah and that was where the berry scent was coming from.
We found ourselves a table with a little assistance from one of the waiters and settled down.
The menu was a fancy black and yellow coloured medium sized booklet with abstract pictures. The interiors had a brown wooden finish with paintings of famous singers, musicians, actors and other modern art based works on the walls. The place just to the right of the entrance had tall cafe tables with high benches for drinks and other beverages.
After observing the interiors and setup of the place, I drew my attention to the menu. 4 of us ordered eefu noodles, Hong-Kong fried rice, Dragon chicken and Sholay kebab. The others ordered Manchurian bowl and crispy corn and mushroom.

                        1)Eefu Noodles:
Had a tinged garlic taste with a dab of pepper to it. Not too filling with the usage of veggies. It mainly had small bits of carrot, beans and partially fried semi crispy noodles with fully boiled noodles mixed with soy sauce, chilly sauce and a touch of tomato sauce.
                        2) Hong-kong fried rice:
A slightly spicy taste that would touch your taste buds. Had no vegies but was substituted with shredded chicken tossed in tomato sauce and scrambled egg topped to it.
                        3) Dragon Chicken
The dragon chicken was definitely not as spicy as the ones I've eaten before but fairly spicy with a mix of honey in it. The chicken leg pieces were deep fried, tossed in tomato and chilly sauce and garnished with red, green and yellow bell peppers with a sprinkle of black pepper and chopped garlic in it.
                        4)Sholey kebab:
The kebabs were the last to come. A bit hard and chewy. Not very impressive with the taste either. The kebabs were served with a topping of mayonnaise in a wavy pattern on top of them, a bowl of mint chutney and tomato sauce with a garnish of cucumber and onions cut in rings.
                        5) Crispy corn and mushroom
Very crispy indeed. The corn and mushrooms were wrapped in a mixture of cornflour with salt ,pepper and chillies and deep fried. These were then sauté with a spicy mix of chilly, mint powder, garlic powder, a tinge of ginger and chopped onion. A must try dish.
                        6) Manchurian bowl:
This was served on a medium sized white bowl with steamed rice and about 5–6 Manchurian balls with a thick spicy gravy. A very simple yet attractive presentation. It wasn't too spicy but not too mild either. The deep fried Manchurian balls had a taste of burnt garlic and ginger with a soft layer of cornflour seeped with the saucy gravy. Good attempt but not a typical Chinese taste.
Finally as we finished with the food and ordered the bill, the waiter placed two mini yellow buckets with mouth fresheners and tooth picks along with the bill card.

The place has good interiors and food. The service is not very prompt or impressive but the place is better known for its hookah and teen hangouts. The places also provides a corporate or a student discount but make sure you have a proof of your student Id or employee id to avail the same.
