The Salt

Saturday Outing

We left home at 12:30 on Saturday and had plans of watching a recent movie in the "Forum mall" at Kormangala,Bangalore. But by the time we reached the venue we were hungry, tired and dehydrated due to all the dust, pollution and traffic. As we entered the mall, we found a restaurant called "SALT". The name was attractive and so was the idea. The restaurant was divided into two sections, italian and Indian. We decided to go for the Indian side of it. As we entered the place, the lady at the reception showed us the way to our table. We sat on the table close to the bar, the table being second from the entrance.

The restaurant has a small bar close to the entrance which serves soft drinks, lemonades, juices as well as hard drinks. As we took our places, the waiter gave us the menu. We were given the usual as well as the special menu cards.  As we went through the menu, I decided to focus only on the starters and appetizers.

SHORBA
We started with the Indian Soup which is better known as Shorba.  This soup had a creamy consistency(not thick as there was no cornflour added to it to increase its consistency)  with a mild hint of pepper. The soup also had crisp golden fried onions and a pinch of saffron for flavor. Not very rich, mildly spicy with small chunks of boiled shredded chicken added as a base to the Indian gravy soup.

The Fryums
The soup was followed by the Indian rice pappad or Fryums. These were colored Pappads, deep fried and sprinkled with salt and served with mint chutney. These yummy fried pappads are made from powdered rice and have a salty and spicy taste to them. These are served as a complimentary starter.

Crispy Veggies
Unlike most other restaurants that serve deep fried vegetables like cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and mushroom named crispy veggies, this food place serves finely chopped vegetables like cabbage, carrots and beans shallow fried and sprinkled with masala toppings and cheese , wrapped with a thin and crispy coat. These thin crispies have the perfect crunch and taste needed for your taste buds to want more.

Kebab Chicken Wrap
The wrap was tightly rolled with a filling of chicken chunks, cabbage and capsicum. The filling did not taste much like kebab but had the flavors prominent in smoky butter chicken curry mixed with cream and sauce. The chicken pieces were cut in cubes and were mouth filling. The dish was served with a bucket of french fries and some sprouts, beetroot, tomato and lettuce mixed salad with a squeeze of lemon in it.

Fried Squids:-
The Squids were also brought in a wired container that looked similar to a mini bucket made from copper and bronze. The fried fingers had a crispy yet chewy texture. Not very impressive with the taste. They tasted similar to any regular fish that is slightly more chewy yet juicy and appetizing. The recipe could be a bit more innovative but the chef does not seem to have made much of a fusion with the dish keeping it light and simple. This dish was also served with the same sprouts salad, sliced lemon and mint chutney to go with it.

Fresh Lime Soda(salty) :-
Our lunch ended with a glass of fresh lime soda, garnished with a slice of lemon and mint leaves. The drink had the strong flavor of lemon fused with soda. The drink was very strong with the taste and I wish it could be a bit milder with the tangyness of lemon with some more salt added to it.

I would love to get your comments on the dishes apart from the ones mentioned in the post.
